School of Art: Academic Advising

The School of Art (SOA) Advising Center provides academic advising to declared Pre-Art, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts majors for both program and General Education requirements. Bachelor of Arts programs include Art, Art Education, and Art History, while the Bachelor of Fine Arts programs include Ceramics, Drawing & Painting, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, and 3-D Media (Fiber, Metal, & Wood).

The SOA Advising Center offers workshops that fulfill CSULB’s mandatory advising requirement for both first-year freshmen and transfer students. Additionally, the SOA Advising Center encourages all students to schedule an annual, individual advising appointments to ensure you’re on track to complete General Education and program/department requirements, meet SOA deadlines, and make timely progress toward graduation.

Mandatory Advising Information

Mandatory Freshmen Advising

CSULB requires all first-year freshmen to attend academic advising workshops prior to registering for classes. The School of Art conducts academic advising workshops designed specifically for declared Pre-Art, Art Education, and Art History freshmen that reviews General Education and introduces SOA requirements, policies, and deadlines.

Freshmen are required to attend two advising workshops during their first year at CSULB:

  • Fall SOA Advising Workshop (mid-October to late-November). An email from CSULB will be sent to freshmen reminding you of the freshman advising workshop requirement – Pre-Art students are assigned to the SOA Advising Center.
  • Spring SOA Advising Workshop (mid-March to early-May). Stop by the SOA Advising Center for additional information and to register for a required advising workshop.

Freshmen who do not successfully complete their academic advising requirement will have a Registration Hold placed on their MyCSULB account and will not be able to register for the upcoming semester.

Mandatory Transfer Advising

The School of Art requires all first-year transfer students to attend academic advising workshops prior to registering for classes. Advising workshops introduce remaining General Education requirements and how to understand the Academic Requirements Report available on MyCSULB. These workshops also provide critical information, requirements, and deadlines related to applying to the competitive Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) program.

Transfer students are required to attend one advising workshop during their first semester at CSULB:

  • SOA Transfer Advising Workshop (Fall Admits: mid-October and mid-November; Spring Admits: mid-March to mid-April). An email from the SOA Advising Center will be sent to transfer students reminding them of this requirement. Stop by the SOA Advising Center for additional information and to register for an advising workshop.
